The K-NFB Reader is the result of a collaborative effort between Kurzweil and the National Federation of the Blind.

Sorting mail, checking ATM receipts, glancing at handouts - busy people think nothing of doing such tasks on the run, unless they are blind. Those who are blind have needed human readers or scanners and software programs for such jobs - until now.

This portable device will revolutionize the way the blind deal with the avalanche of print confronted with each day.

Technology that scans and reads printed material to the blind is nothing new, but this personal reader is the first truly handheld device to do the job. Combining a state-of-the-art digital camera with a powerful data digital assistant housed in a custom-designed, attractive case, the K-NFB Reader puts the best available character recognition software together with text-to-speech conversion technology, all in the palm of the hand.

Hold the Reader's camera over print - a restaurant menu, directions, or a memo from your boss - and snap a picture. In seconds, the contents of the printed document are heard in clear, synthetic speech. Capture, read, and discard pages; store them for later reading; or transfer files to a computer or Braille-aware PDA. The Reader even has a headphone jack so you won't disturb your neighbors.

The K-NFB Reader's convenient size, simple design, and powerful technology deliver unprecedented access to printed matter. The Reader has the following capabilities:

Reads most printed documents, from letters and memos to pages in a book;
Reads address labels and package information and instructions
Reads an entire page or a few lines for identification
Stores thousands of printed pages with easily obtainable extra memory
Transfers files to desktop and laptop computers or Braille notetakers
Reads documents from computers or other devices

Imagine how the K-NFB Reader will change your life if you are blind. A colleague hands you a document for review in the next hour. No problem. You come back from vacation to an overflowing "in" basket? Put the Reader to work, and the clutter is gone. Need to check your seat assignment in the airport? The information can be a snapshot away.

You'll find hundreds of uses for the K-NFB Reader every day - all in one small package, and for less than you would pay for a portable notetaker with a Braille Display.

No other device in the history of adaptive technology for the blind has provided quicker access to more information than the Reader. The world of the printed word is opened to the blind in a way it has never been before.

User Testimonial for K-NFB Reader

"The K-NFB Reader opens up many doors that have been closed to me in the past. With it I can find out the contents of a can, the directions from the sinus medication box, the upcoming meetings from the job bulletin board, the serial number from the new printer, the correct side of the papers that need to be copied, the forms I am asking clients to sign, the printed inserts from the talking books I am reading, and identify my dollar bills (as few of those as I have).

"Technology has taken a big step forward allowing us to take more control over our lives."
