kReader PC
The kReader PC from knfb Reading Technology is a breakthrough in assisted reading and study skills software for students, including struggling readers. Developed under the direction of Assistive Technology pioneer Ray Kurzweil, the kReader PC makes reading fun for students with its engaging and easy to use interface. The kReader PC interface utilizes state-of-the-art video gaming technology to create 3-D book viewing. Further advances in file format and conversion technology make content acquisition fast and simple. The program allows direct import of Microsoft Office, PDF, and many other file formats. Student-created multimedia content provides an interactive way for students of all levels to create and display their own content. The kReader PC works seamlessly with the K-NFB Mobile Reader software for cell phones – create content for reading on-the-go or save and transfer to the kReader PC later for further study. Advantages for Students Many students, particularly those with difficulty reading, struggle with the complicated document displays and intricate navigation commonly found in PC programs. kReader PC has developed a clean, uncluttered interface with a natural book-like display of reading materials. Content displayed in the 3-D book format features realistic animated page turning – engaging the student and enhancing the user experience. Study and reference tools are easily accessible. Reading is highlighted and read aloud in high quality text to speech. Word study tools, such as dictionary, thesaurus, translation, internet search and other features, are immediately available for more detailed study of words or phrases that are not clear. Voice painting encourages students to create documents with multiple speaking characters – inspiring creative writing at all levels. Notes, even handwritten ones, are easily exported for later reference or study. Advantages for Teachers Acquisition of content has always been a time-intensive labor issue for schools who are creating alternate displays of educational content for access by students. kReader PC uses the most advanced Microsoft file format, XPS, to standardize file formats within the program. The XPS file format is created natively in Microsoft Office 2007 and Office 2003. PDF and KES files are easily and quickly converted to XPS with no errors. Documents saved as XPS give an exact, high quality image of the original document. This standardized XPS format allows the kReader PC to work seamlessly with all Microsoft Office applications and does not require introduction of specialized file formats. For documents which are not available electronically, kReader PC provides OmniPage 16 OCR for quick and easy scanning into XPS. Tech notes: |
